I think we humans are endlessly creative and the scope for novelty and connection is greater when we’re less constrained by detailed designs, or our imaginings of other people’s desires and expectations. So I try to let my unconscious 'do the work' , feeling my way into creating forms that feel resolved enough to stand alone. Working in this way, possibilities for self-determination emerge; ways to re-find ourselves, with others, in a world that can feel increasingly alienating.
Often, I’ll start with clay on the wheel and make some sort of closed form, which I’ll later re-open and turn into a jar, or sculpt into another form. The work I’m happiest with seems to speaks to the tension arising from the dual need for both containment and adventure. In that sense, my practice is a kind of therapeutic expressionism, with each new piece helping me both to explore an emerging theme and the possibilities of the medium, and to learn about myself in relation to feeling of uncertainty, anticipation, wonder and disappointment.
This site shows a selection of my recent work, and there’s more in Instagram. I'm open to sales and occasional commissions, so please do get in touch if you see something you like.
